Excessive Sweating (Hyperhydrosis)

For Hands & Underarms

Hyperhydrosis means excessive sweating. Sweating is one of the most important ways in which the body loses heat, but people with hyperhydrosis produce sweat in far greater amounts than is needed to control the temperature.

What are the causes of hyperhydrosis?

Many things can 'trigger' normal sweating and this is also true for hyperhydrosis - it is just the amount of sweat that varies. 'Triggers' can include exercise, heat or cold, alcohol, coffee, tea, smoking, hot or spicy food, stress anxiety or strong emotions, and certain times of day. About 30% - 50% of people with hyperhydrosis have a relative with a similar problem, suggesting that there may be a genetic cause.

What does a medical treatment for hyperhydrosis involve?

Using a very fine needle, a small amount (0.1 - 0.2 ml solution) of a prescription only medicine is injected into 10 to 15 places. These fine injections are placed about 1 cm apart and are also spread evenly. Only a Registered Medical Practitioner can prescribe such medications.

How does it work?

The medication used 'blocks' the action of the nerves that supply the sweat glands thus stopping the sweat glands from producing sweat. Over 6 - 12 weeks new nerve endings grow to replace them. This means that the effects of treatment will last for several months but eventually it will 'wear off'. If you decide not to have any further treatment, then sweating will gradually return to the level it was before you started treatment.
